About Taylor Childs
Taylor Childs (b. 1995, Detroit, MI) is a multidisciplinary artist and proud Detroit native whose work investigates themes of identity, ancestral memory, the aftereffects of the African Diaspora, consumerism, and the constructs of race within supremacist systems. Her practice centers on textile-based storytelling, using fabric manipulation and material culture to engage with the complexities of African American life. Through vibrant assemblages and experimental fashion, Childs explores the visual language of bling culture, the poetics of preservation, and the legacy of familial care. Her pieces often blend rich symbolism, domestic materials, and archival imagery to reflect the joy, struggle, and resilience of Black communities.
Childs earned her B.F.A. from the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit, MI, where she interned with prominent local artists including Carole Harris and Tiff Massey. Her commitment to community arts education is foundational to her career. Since 2018, she has taught Crafts and Fibers at University Prep: Art and Design, serving students in grades 9–12. She has also led youth and adult workshops through creative initiatives like Hope for Flowers by fashion designer Tracy Reese (2020–2025) and the CCS Pre-College Fiber Program (2023). In 2020 and 2022, she received the Scholastic Art & Writing Award for Inspiring Educator, recognizing her excellence in arts education.
In addition to her teaching practice, Childs serves as the Community Arts Director of W.I.S.E. Partnership, a Detroit-based nonprofit focused on social, educational, and economic empowerment. Her commitment to community-driven work continues to shape her approach to materiality and representation.
Childs is a consistent participant in Design Core Detroit’s Month of Design, with notable projects including the Footlocker Sneaker House (2020, 2022), Design in the City: Trunk Show (2020), and a 2025 solo exhibition and pop-up collaboration with Woodward Throwbacks focused on sustainability. That same year, she curated an experimental fashion show and solo exhibition for the opening of the Love Building, showcasing work that combined textile innovation with cultural storytelling.
Her exhibition history spans both regional and international platforms. In 2024, she was selected to participate in ArtClvb’s DET<>TOKYO exchange, exhibiting in Shibuya-Ku, Tokyo. Other notable exhibitions include After Effects (Patch and Remington Gallery, Marcellus, MI), Art Prize (Grand Rapids, MI, 2021), Unraveled. Restructured. Revealed. (Trout Museum of Art, Appleton, WI), and In This House, curated by Library Street Collective for Art Mile (Detroit, MI, 2021). She held a solo residency at the Siren Hotel in partnership with Patch and Remington Gallery, and in 2023, she received Best in Show at the Detroit Artist Market Annual Scholarship Awards and Exhibition.
